Broken Ghost Couture Q&A

Please welcom, Jana from  Broken Ghost Couture
We’re pleased to have her with us to offer some wonderful answers to the creativity inspired within!

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.

A: I live in Calgary, Canada and am a wife and mother of 2 teenage boys. I have been designing clothing for about 4 years and am self taught. I have done quite a bit of sewing in my life, but designing pieces without working with a pattern is something I have learned to do in more recent years.

Q: What events and/or people have led you to become an artist?

A: I have always been an artist starting at an early age with drawing and making creative things with whatever was available . In my lifetime, I have dabbled in almost every artistic medium including floral arranging, mural painting, oil painting and sewing. About 3 years ago, when I was the owner of a second hand clothing store, I began cutting and re-sewing pieces together to sell in my shop. It started as a bit of a fun hobby, but when I sold my shop 1.5 years ago, I began selling my pieces online on Etsy. It has become quite popular and I’m busy full time with this.

Q: How do you come up with your creative ideas?

A: I never plan anything in advance. I have mounds of unwanted articles of clothing I have collected from friends and thrift shops. I sift through and find a piece that inspires me in some way. I take that small idea and keep building on it until I have created a new garment. I am influenced by my own taste, what season it is, and what the current trends are. I don’t really enjoy making custom pieces because I feel that some of the spontaneous creativity is taken away from me because I need have to follow a ‘plan’ and that is the aspect of designing that I enjoy the most.

Q: What’s your quirkiest attribute?

A: I like my clothing to have a sense of humor. There’s something whimsical included in most of my pieces.

Q: What would you say to someone who says they aren’t creative?

A: I think everyone is creative at something, whether it’s cooking, drawing, gardening or working out a budget. I think being creative at something has alot to do with how interested you are in it. If you say you aren’t a good cook, it means you really are not interested in cooking! An interest in or passion for something is what drives your creativity. Now ask me to get creative with organizing a closet and I’ll be lost!

Q: Where are your items available for sale?

A: I am currently only selling items online at Etsy. I am a bit of a loner and enjoy my own company! Working from home and actually doing the selling quietly on my computer is perfect for me.

Q:  What project/s do you currently have on your plate?

A: I am planning to participate in Alberta Fashion Week shows in April. I am working on my collection for Spring/Summer and my inspiration for this collection is a mix of safari style wear mixed with soft, floaty fabrics. I adore very feminine and delicately detailed clothing and this is what my collection will showcase.
